Vacuum trouble

I traced my timing retard problem to a lack of vacuum at the nipple in the carb base. None. Is it plugged with something or am I missing something?

The other question I have relates to the Rochester valve in the smog system. The VALVE is drawing a vacuum. Is that correct or does it indicate valve failure?

Send me your email address and I'll send you what little is published on the emissions bit.

I will need your car's correct model & year.

Last time I saw a car with the system running (in fact, the only time I saw such a system running on an MB) was in July (Christy's car). Her carb base had TWO nipples. One plugged and one not. The second one was on the manifold itself I think. It didn't match anything I had seen before.

OK, thanks. I checked the engine manual you kindly furnished but it doesn't cover the rochester valve very well.

I have two nipples on the front carb, the retard was plugged into the one on the carb base (the clogged one), and the other is on the manifold, it is a good vacuum and I plugged the retard in here Timing looks bang on now. If I plug or hook the rochester control line to the clogged nipple I get backfire on decelleration. If I leave it off and open I have a weak engine. I think I'll have to do more of the smog checks in the manual to see how many of the components are working.

I have a '69 230/8 M180.954 engine, W114.015 chassis, sn:10-014292. I think it was built in the fall of '68.

Thanks,
Mark

Ah, then you have it already. I didn't recognize the call sign.

Section 14-4 is 4 pages long. That's 4 pages more than anybody else has.

I'll play more tomorrow starting at the pump. Any Idea why I can't get any vacuum off the front carb nipple?
Thanks.

I think in Christy's case, there were two small screws blocking the pipes (done on purpose). Ours to wonder why...
