645 miles in the W116 this weekend
Drove down to St. Louis this weekend for Mother's Day. I decided to take the 280se and was very pleased. Friday evening I had the sunroof open, the cruise set on 70 and just pointed that long nose down I-55. Even at 4000 rpm the engine was surprisingly quiet and I still got 22mpg.
Coming home yesterday it was close to 90 so I cranked the AC. Even with the famous Illinois prairie cross-winds it was a very relaxing trip. I even managed about 20mpg with the AC on. |

Not bad going, I couldn't get 20mpg out of my 6.9 if i dropped it out of a plane. But the a/c works really well

I agree. My SEL 4.5 does well to get 15 with the air on.

Yet another reason why the M110 is one of the best engines MB has ever made.

I've never driven a car that's more pleasant to drive than a W116. They seem like the perfect car. The fuel mileage my 300SD gets makes me smile.

22mpg in a W116 is impressive. The longest run in my W116 was 836 miles over 3 days and I felt like I was filling it up every 4 hours.
