cork gasket sealant?

To seal or not to seal. I am replacing the automatic transmission fluid, gasket and filter on a 63 220Sb. Should put sealant on the cork gasket? If so, what kind? The stupid questions are starting to flow.

It all depends. Personally, unless there has been damage to either of the sealing surfaces, I stick by the adage, "Gasket sealers are for beginners". Yeah, yeah, kind of snobbish I know but it's true.

99% of all "cork" gaskets are usually pieces of cork floated in a polymer base. Kind of their own built in sealant.

Loose pieces of silicone glop floating around inside of a transmission worries me more than having to replace a gasket I overtightened.

I am not beyond using a bit of high tack adhesive to hold the gasket in place for re-assembly although a light smearing of petroleum jelly usually works as well.

I usually smear a thin layer of wheel bearing grease on one side of cork gaskets to assist with installation. As long as the surfaces are clean and not damaged, you should be fine.

The job went smoothly. Old ATF and gasket in great shape. Few shavings in the old filter. Took it out for a spin. The engine went through her paces without a hiccup. I love old iron.
