W114 Buyers Guide?

Hope you all don't mind, I just jumped over here from the diesel section. I have my eye on a '72 250, but I know NOTHING about them. All my cars are diesels, but this looks interesting. Can someone point me to a buyers guide or post with a list of things to look for on this car? TIA.

do a search, this very question has been asked many times.

Basically....

Rust. These cars rust. Check them out carefully.

Heater/defroster fan. Unbelievably hard to replace....

Aluminum cylinder head. If the antifreeze hasn't been maintained, expect lots of corrosion problems with the head. I've had four of these engines... and three bad heads.

Carbs. The original Zeniths are usually worn/warped. Webers solve the problem, but at a dear cost. (I love my Webers)

All else is the usual stuff on a 40 year old car........

They are a joy to drive when well maintained, but expect mid teens mileage on premium.

Jim

Good stuff...one question regarding coolant, what should you do if you have no idea what kind of coolant the PO put in (M110 engine)?

If you think it's old, then flush it by draining the radiator, refilling, running and draining again four times. Then fill with new coolant. You can use the MB or MB approved Zerex chemistry if you're particular. Although pretty much any new universal coolant chemistry is approved alloy engines.

Good stuff, thanks for the advice...I think I have some pin-hole leaks in the radiator that only show up when the engine has shut off. Maybe I'll take it to a radiator shop before flushing.

I looked at the car today. It ran great, much better than it looked however. Surface rust in about a dozen places and a few holes. Interior was very good for a car this age. Everything worked. I was told 65K miles even though the odo said 35K. He told me he had the carbs rebuilt (original Zeniths). It started instantly, was a little cold blooded though. I think I'll wait. Thanks for all the input though.
