W108 rear wheel bearing
Hello, I've been chasing a rear-end whirring noise for a while on my 108 250se and after checking the right rear wheel after a short drive this weekend I found a fair bit of play in that wheel when rocking it, so I'm guessing the bearing is knackered. Strangely, I had no play (or maybe I didn't grab it hard enough) when I checked about a month ago but I guess it was starting to go bad and that was checked cold...
I have no MB indies near me and the dealer rates are a joke as they are in the US, (plus I suspect they haven't got anyone there who's heard of the W108...) so I fancy diy-ing it. There's a good write-up on the pagoda SL group: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DriveShaft/RearWheelBearings ...which makes it look like not too bad of a job, though the parking brake dismantling has me a little worried. Has anyone here done this job before and have any advice? cheers...

It could be the bearing,
it could be the swing axle internal universal and slip joint. How many miles, ? Jack up rear axle under the trailing arm and give it a shake. If it feels like the wheel is pivoting at the outer bearing it is the inner. Drain the fluid and check for metal chunks. An outer bearing will just whirr, and not move too much. You can do a bearing, an inner joint is fatal, get a complete junkyard/pick-a-part one to replace it. |

Hi, 141,000 miles, I changed the diff fluid about 500 miles ago and the old fluid came out clean, no metal in it.

Jack under the right rear trailing arm to get the tire off the ground 1" and run the through the gears.
That should determine clunks vs whirrs. Use two persons one on the brake and throttle, one to listen. I have run to speedo to 60mph that way. clean oil and 141k should be ok unless of abuse. I did have a left wheel bearing go noisy at 120k |
