Glow plugs will not turn OFF

Hello,

I have a 1976 w115 300D that i am trying to get into working shape to use as a dd.

Right now i have to main issue preventing it from being a reliable dd.

The glow plugs will not shut off, the wires in between the glow plugs will glow bright orange and even started to melt the ground wire on the last plug closest to the radiator.

I unhook this ground wire to get them to stop glowing so it wont kill my battery or burn up the plugs.

The other issue is the battery is not charging, the battery light stays on key off and key out. while it is running it get dimmer as rpm increases.

I know the wrong belt must be on there because it is adjusted to the max and is still slack.

The alternator diodes are toasted most likely from the current draw of the glow plugs.

Does your car have the "gorilla knob" style of glow plug management?

Ah, ok, i am going to pull it out and have it tested anyways.

The glow plugs engage when the key is turned to the on postion. Another interesting symptom is that the glow plugs dont turn off even with the key off...

The previous owner did/had a rewire of most of the engine harness.

Thanks

my '75 300D had the same issue with the GP control. It also smoked the voltage regulator when it happened. I disconnected the stock GP controller and installed a manually controlled GP circuit and replaced the reg. 3 years now and still working fine. Sure I have to push a button now, but the added glow time is nice in the winter time. Good luck with getting yours sorted out.

ive seen this before, i didnt feel like diagnosing it, all i did was install a switch from the gp relay, so essentially id press a button with the key on to pre heat the cylinders, start the car, then turn the switch off. are you restoring your car? or just driving it? it may be a pita to deal with a birdsnest of wiring from a p.o. if they didnt know what they were doing.
