I ended up with installing the new transmission mount plus the 3 shims (6mm thick) for motor mounts and transmission mount. All seem to be fine, no clunk any more. All noises have gone!
I didn't have to adjust the shifting or throttle linkage.
I am putting the second motor shock left side in as soon as I have the parts. Maybe like magic with the second shock the 6mm shim is no longer needed?
Car feels good again.
Did anyone use shims as well because the clearances were too tight.

i've not had to use shims in the past , but I see nothing wrong in them. Lots of stuff compresses and moves over time ,a little shim here and there wont hurt a thing
You may find the shock will be the trick, good luck

Oh: I am moving to Mucat, Oman, in the Middle East and I want to drive in Style.
I am taking 2 Mercedes with me. My 1987 300SDL which will be the desert cruiser and the 300SEL 3.5. Both cars are dear to me.

Thanks Panada,

I received the 2 shocks but didn't get the washers and rubber stops in time...unfortunately. I installed the right side shock which sits off center in the front of the engine relative to the motor mount....with the old shims and rubber.
Left side I installed the self made bracket but not the shock itself...yet.
I will install the left side shock as soon as I have the car up and running in Oman. I also got the 2 new Bilstein shocks for the front suspension which I'll install 'on the other side'.

Without the noises the car is a blast to drive.
