108/109 AC temp control replacement.

I'm in trouble now. It appears that the underdash kneeepad has to be removed in order to snake the AC wire temp control sensor into the right position relative to the evaporator. I have already screwed up the removal of the kneepad by failing to realize that it is molded into an aluminum box framework, and I can't see how that is secured. At least some of the screws holding that box in place seem to be behind the black plastic AC plenum.
Also, I have no idea how to properly locate wire temp control sensor once I have removed what I have to remove to get the job done. Can anyone help with this?
P.S. It goes without saying that I should have asked these questions BEFORE I started tearing my car apart. Will I never learn?
