'72 250C auto transmission teach me

Okay, W114, straight six with auto transmission; runs and drives;
1. When first starting reverse is real slow moving, when in drive or any of the lower gears in the beginning of a drive it is slow and straining and then gets better after about a mile or so where it shifts more smoothly.
2. There is a noise like a fan blade hitting metal that is there when initially in gear but it too goes away; I am thinking that is the torque converter, perhaps something loose?
3. If I end up needing to pull it is there a swap to a manual that can be done? I know on the '68 Volvo 122S I have a T5 ford fits nicely.

I have changed the fluid and filter. I have not done transmission work before so I suppose it is time to learn. I appreciate any thoughts, point me in the right direction to learn. Thank you, David

What did the ATF look like when you changed it?

This usually stays pretty clean. It shouldn't look too dark and shouldn't smell 'burnt'.

Are you sure the ATF level is right? It could be low, but would have to be very low.

It is checked in Park with the motor running after having idled for approx 5 min and having been shifted thru all gears with pause in each for a couple of seconds or more and repeat this a couple of cycles, then check level at dipstick. It should be at the Low mark for these conditions. High mark is only for Hot conditions after driving on freeway, etc.

Don't overfill.

You might look at the flex plate bolts

These bolt the flex plate to the front of the torque converter. You can see these thru the access plate at the bottom of the rear plate on the motor.

2 bolts to remove the access plate, then rotate the motor at the front harmonic balancer bolt to expose these bolts with 13mm hex heads, 3 pairs in a trigonal configuration.

Make sure they are all there. That could cause some noises if some are missing.

Very easy to check.

Thank you for the input and I will get on that this weekend; I will probably go ahead with a manual transmission swap in the future but do want to conquer this automatic first. I have no need for this car at all, just love it and have VPD or Vehicle Purchasing Disorder; I work in a Partial Hospitalization Program and the attending psychiatrist validates that diagnosis for which there is no treatment she says, only managing anxiousness by continuing to buy cars you do not need and have no drivers for other than yourself. Anyway sorry to burden you with my personal problem; I will let you know how things turn out and again thank you for enabling me.

I think you should check your shift linkage.

Do you happen to know what type of transmission you have? I don't know what is fitted to your car (and I'm too lazy to look it up on wikipedia). Is it for example a 722.X or is it the earlier type that uses a hydraulic coupling instead of a torque converter?

Complicated questions? Well we need to raise the bar at sometime or other don't we!

Good to know Jim.

Do you happen to know when the big change over to 722.X transmissions happened? I'm guessing it was over a period of a few years...
