Need help identifying an issue on a possible purchase...
I am looking at buying a 76 240D and the owner says that it starts up and runs fine, but randomly it will die. Anyone one know what could be causing this? I have a 74 240D in my driveway for parts as well.

There could be a few things that could be causing it to stop, and I won't guess because because I might lead you astray. But I would be cautious of this car, I think mint condition doesn't exactly describe it and the asking price is nothing special. And in my opinion anyone who lowers these cars shouldn't be trusted.

This fellow wrote in recently with some problem on this car. He seems to have torn out the oil pan because of its extreme lowness.
It could be a nice car if raised back up. Stock springs should be fairly easy and cheap to find. The dying is probably fuel related....an air leak in the suction line or a stopped fuel filter. All the stuff he spoke of probably is related to bottoming the engine out on a rail road track or some such. The car is nigh unto useless at that ride height so you might be able to snitch a decent car for a low price and straighten it out. |
Probably dies because the bearings are shot from driving around without oil in the engine and it seizes occasionally . I was given a W114 once which had been lowered the same amount and they are undrivable like this . not onkly do the fronts foul on the fenders but the CV joints in the diff are at the extreme of their movement and will be worn .

It may be an unfair stereotype or assumption, but whenever I see a vehicle for sale that was lowered (or lifted) or where the seller talks about the stereo, I pass by. This has both.
