Great tips, thanks.
With regards to the exhaust, what is the best vendor source for that? Thanks! |

Thanks for all the advice, guys.
Installed the full Timevalve stainless exhaust last weekend. Oh how satisfying, the old one literally crumbled in my hands as I removed it. It might have been the original system. You get what you pay for with this one. The fitment was great, they custom made the system to spec, and used 300SE tubing which is slightly larger since I asked if there were any performance options. All in all, I am very satisfied. The thing is quiet as a mouse now too, so I might hit them up for a straight through center section just to have on hand. We'll see. The system just before install in below. Next up, some cosmetics, seatbelt upgrades, rebuilding the shifter, and something for freeway speed help. Also, has anyone seen a really nice tach install on a Fintail? I'm thinking of getting one from a 230SL and having it installed in the dash somehow. A 6.3 unit would be great given it is smaller, but I can't find one! Thanks for all the MB support, gang! Randy www.bringatrailer.com |

A 6.3 tacho wont work because it's set for a v8.and it redlines at 5300 RPM. An eraly Smith accessory tacho which used a white wire from the coil to count impulses is a great look in the finnys.
Mercedes Debuted their own 220SE rally car last weekend at the 'ring. It's basically a standard car. |

I am subscribed to Daimlers News system which sends out news items. They are from 2 weeks ago when they announced the rally cars debut.
I have at least three mates who are also building a 6.3 racers. You should join the m100 group where parts advice etc are all available .The International M-100 Group They will also be most interested in the cars last four figures of the chassis number for the registry . If I had the money I would buy the ex Klaus Berhmann 6.8 from Mechatronik .As it's name implies,it has the spare engine from the SPA car of 1972. We have two 6.3s on our radar; one is here in town and we're getting it on a lift early this week, and the other is a friend's boss' car but it's up in Toronto. Awaiting pics on that one. We figured if we can turn a 300E into a great racer, we could have quite some fun in a 6.3. We'll certainly join the M-100 group once we get the car, and we'll certainly seek out the other three guys you mentioned for collective advice. Thanks.

@MercMad - Thanks for tipping me off about that Mercedes Classic Center fintail. I dug around and found the best photos to be on this German site:

Hey all,
So I'm shopping W108 rear axles for the car to give me disk brakes and better freeway gears. Below is the pic of one I am looking at. This one seems to have the bulkier (hydraulic or pneumatic?) assist spring, whereas my W111 has a horizontal coil spring. Can I mount this more sophisticated unit? Or can a coil spring be swapped on? Or should I keep looking for a 4.5 axle without this?

Just remove the compensator and use your W111 Spring. it's a bolt in otherwise.
Whats the ratio of the new Diff? A mate in South Africa races a W111 in historic races and he has removed the compensator spring entirely to bring the rear down . It works a treat but I doubt you would want to do that in rallying. |

Yes, much more on that car is on this site:
My Finny Racer I covet his triple Weber set-up! The axle in the photo is either a 3.27 or a 3.48. (Trying to get the seller to test which).

The ratio will stamped on the left hand side of the diff head . There is machined pad there with both the ratio and the serial number of the diff (not the part number BTW).. That looks to be a high ratio V8 diff with that cooler pipe on the side . Good choice for what you need regardless of the ratio .

The tripple carb set-up is good looking, but I'm not sure it gives that much more power compared with an injection system. I would certainly go for an injected 2.8 first, if rules allow. |

Next Chapter.....
I'm slow with the updates, but the fintail has seen quite a bit of action as of late. Events seem to be driving the schedule, so last weekend's Snowball Rally really kicked us into gear.
Here is what we have done, along with some photos below.
