220sb w111 reverse gear problems
 

Hey follow peachy users- I've recently purchased a manual 1964 220sb mercedes. Things I've done is replace the starter motor, pull my brakes apart and clean em down, bled the lines. I started her up and took it for a little test drive in my street. Every gear works perfectly but i can't select reverse. I've checked the link spot in the engine bay and all is connected properly. I've tried all i can possibly but i can't find a spot where it feels it needs to go.

Is there a special reverse lever or switch, or can someone supply a manual gear plan layout. any help will do as I'm keen to move on to restoring the interior.

I presume you have a column shift. When you pull the shift lever towards you you will go past a spring interlock and push the shifter up. Your hand or fingers should not contact the steering wheel.

You need to tell me if this happens, or not.

Under the steering wheel and in line with the shifter column, are two shift bushings and they need to be in good condition, ie not dried out etc.

Down the shifter rod and in the engine compartment is the shifter 'transmission' for lack of a better word. That device takes the shifter motions and actuates the two rods to the transmission. There is a small metal cap on top of this device that takes the in and out motion and moves one rod. Take off the cap and grease the actuators. Also make sure the drain hole at the lowest part is free of crud.

The shifter rods have small sockets on the ends and they need to be checked as well.

At the trans end, there are two rubber bushings that will need to be replaced given the age of the car.

I recently finished this overhaul.

Another point, the screw cap on the shifter has a bushing and it will need to be replaced after all these years.

thanks very much for the detailed reply, will definitely help me to sort it out. looks like ill have a bit of tinkering to do this weekend. If you did have any pics that would be a great help aswell so i can compare them to my parts. ill post reply pics if anythings different.
