79 300d injector timing help

Hey guys,

I'm trying to ensure my injector pump timing is accurate. I removed the #1 injector line and removed the spring and valve looking piece inside. Went through a complete combustion cycle after priming the system and did not see any fuel coming out of the injector port#1....:/ what am I doing wrong? In the book I have it says to rotate the motor until you get close to 24 degrees timing and look for the fuel pooling up at the port. After the degree of timing is found, then rotate the pump in or out based on timing findings.

Can I get some advice? I may have to double check my valve adjustment I did also, my engine is shaking a little more than it used to now and I am trying to ensure everything is in spec before I take the valve cover off again.

Thanks in advance,

Jimmy

I had the same result when attempting to do the same thing on my '76 300D. I haven't had a chance to re-try, but in reading the factory service manual later (you know, when all else fails, read the directions I noticed that they suggest a full-load position of the regulating lever (the "throttle") and disconnecting the vacuum line from the fuel shutoff solenoid.

I suspect that one or both was my problem and could be yours as well. I have not had a chance to to re-test. Let us know if this helps, or perhaps others will post more definitive knowledge.

IP,s are adjusted by drip timing and not by pool timing.
You need a reservoir and a drip pipe to do this job.
Conneced the reservoir to the fuel inlet on the IP, and the drip pipe to the first cylinder outlet, after you remove the spring and the plunger.
Set the engine to about 35 gegree before igniton TDC and fill the reservoir with diesel.
After the air bleeds out you will see a stream of diesel coming out of the drip pipe.
Now turn the engine to 24 degree.
You should see one drop every 1 to 3 seconds.
