Exhaust system advice please
We are restoring my son's 1967 230S. While stripping the body for placement on the rottiserie, I discovered the entire exhaust system was shot.
After some searching, I find that the parts are not readily available after market. I'm not preping the car for the concourse, just want a reliable fun car for the boy to drive off to college in. So, it doesn't need to be OEM correct, just functional,..if the OEM parts are not out there , or the parts are waaaaay too expensive, I can certainly settle for an alternative. Perhaps even a custom job, with a muffler that fits (roughly) in the space provided. Any advice,... My part #s are as follows: 108 490 08 20 (engine pipe) 111 491 46 01 (muffler) and 110 490 12 21 (center pipe) Thanks to all for the help you've all given on this project.

I have used "Anza" brand for W108, W111 complete
I do not know where you can get those where you are. |

1. Be wary of installing just "any" resonator and muffler.
MB specific parts seem to have a certain resonance tuning, that gets upset when one or the other is replaced with non-standard item. That said, back in the seventies my Dad, had a muffler shop fab a custom exhaust for Mom's 69 300SEL 6.3. It consisted of a pair of glass packs subbed into the system in place of the original mufflers, for a total of 4. No resonant frequencies, quiet inside, and just the right amount of burble outside to let people know that this wasn't your standard inline six MB.... 2. Timevalve. While not cheap, they will sound and fit as original. Some don't care for them, but the one on my 280SL still sounds great and is in good condition 6 years later. 3. Get creative. What other series had your engine? Perhaps those parts are available and can be modified to fit your finback. Maybe the early W108 chassis, 250S, would work. When I had to replace my 71 250C exhaust, I wanted a dual system like the coupes had when new. Those went out of stock decades ago, and only the single outlet 250 sedan system remained on the books. I used NOS W108 280S (pipes, muffler and resonator) pieces, and the results turned out great with a bit of custom work. Good luck, Jim

If you bought the complete exhaust system from Mercedes, it would cost between $800-900 unless you get a discount. I wonder if the sponsors of this site could get the parts for less money.

FYI I just went through this while replacing the downpipe on my 230. The Classic Center told me that it was NLA from them. I ended up with a stainless steel pipe from Timevalve. $260 .
Sometimes you just do what you have to do. P.S. I was told that the pipe for the 230S is the same as the one for the 230.

I just installed a full Timevalve stainless system in my '67 230S last weekend.
It went in very well and the fit up around the exhaust manifold was really great. No chance my local exhaust shop could have pulled that off. Also, the guys at Timevalve built it from 300SE-spec tubing which is slightly larger... saved me the hassle of going the dual exhaust route and might give me an extra 0.75 horsepower. 100% positive results. replace middle muffler with bottle resonators
Hey JimFreeh,
I have a 280se 4.5 and my exhaust is due for replacement. (I've got holes all over my muffler) I know there’s a lot more to modernizing an exhaust system than just slapping on performance mufflers. I’ve been trying to do research on the subject. My goal is get a similar effect to what you did with your family’s 300sel 6.3. I want it to be as quiet as possible when cruising at speed but still have that deep low end V8 burble. I’ve read up on H pipes as well as listened to some comparison videos. H pipe seems to reduce rasp and higher frequencies. I’m thinking of placing an h pipe somewhere along the downtubes and then feeding that to two bottle resonators and then on to a replacement 2 in 2 out quiet muffler. Can I get your thoughts or advice? Thanks! Quote:

also i remember that my 450SL is quite a bit quieter at freeway speeds. I know its comparing apples to oranges. but same engine BUT i did notice that the 450sl has a Crossover (h pipe) on the downtubes. and the 280se 4.5 doesnt.
