300 SEL rear calipers
I am trying to rebuild the rear calipers on my 71 300 sel. They have 35 mm pistons and every repair kit that I have looked at is the wrong size (to big). does anyone know where correct kits would be available?
thanks in advance |

Try the dealer or the Classis Center. The EPC will get you the part number.
How are your rear sway bar bushings?

yea, the dealer says that they don't recommend rebuilding the calipers and they will sell me new ones instead.
Apparently 65-68 Porsche 911 rear calipers use the same diameter piston and boot so hopefully those kits will work. |

just 2 cents
They are rebuild-able if there are no pits in the hard chromed bore of the casting half's.
The pucks are more tolerant since they contain the seal. Cleanliness and precise assembly is the key. Remember these were "built" here on earth by humans. and all aircraft flying above you now are collections of "used" and "rebuilt" parts. There is more profit in new calipers than in repair kits. |

By rebuildable, I suppose you mean replacing the seal in the bore and the outer rubber seal. It's not recommended unbolting the halves.

Hi Brian, my comments were directed at the owner, not you. I meant no disrespect.

well, i found kits for 65-68 Porsche 911 that are suppose to be the same size seals , however upon arrival they too were wrong.
I spent a little while going through rebuild kits at my local foreign parts store and finally found one for an Alfa that had a proper diameter seal and boot. I'll see if they work this weekend. |

the Alfa kit worked although the dust boot didn't fit very well and is definitely going to come loose from the body of the caliper. it will work for now until I can find a proper kit.
