What To Replace W110/W111 Headliner Foam With?

I'm still struggling with the windshield installation and am still hoping that my roommate will buy the OEM seals for his 1965 W111 220S. In the meantime, since the glass is out, I am going to replace the headliner. I have the headliner removed and noticed that the foam above the doors and windshields, also on the C-pillar is very brittle and it was causing the headliner to bulge.

It appears to be a chartreuse foam mounted on mohair with an adhesive backing. I removed all of it and scraped off the old adhesive with a plastic scraper. I was thinking of just buying generic foam and using 3M adhesive to glue it on, but if I can purchase foam with a thick adhesive backing like the factory had, then cut to size, I think it would make for a much better and easier installation.

Is foam with a sturdy base and an adhesive backing something that an automotive upholstery or foam shop might carry? I want this headliner to look good and not have problems with the foam padding. I'm just not sure what to replace the foam with.

you can use general upholstery foam and should have good results.
However, you could also use bubble insulation, it looks like tougher bubble wrap, in an effort to ward off moisture which may be absorbed by the foam.

That's a great link. Thanks for sharing it! I already have the replacement padding installed but am waiting for a correct headliner (we ordered one from Turkey that is not even close to fitting and the seller is sending another one, but seems unsure which one fits).

The 300SE is a long wheel base version in RHD. Only 14 were built and this particular car was pulled from a wrecking yard where it had sat for 18 years with a 220S on it's roof.
