63 220s generator problems

The battery in the 1963 220s is not charging and the red light on the dash does not go off at high speeds. Should I go through the trouble of reconditioning the generator? How likely is it the regulator is shot? I have seen some threads that discuss swapping the generator for an alternator. Is this a better way? And if so, can someone direct me to instructions on how to pull this off?
Thanks for your advice,
David

Upgrade to an alternator with a screw on regulator with brushes. Pick a 55 amp or better. All you will need is the thick wire from the B+ post and the small blue wire for the gen light. simple and easy.

You probably need new brushes for your generator. If the regulator is shot, get one from AC Delco if you want to keep the generator that is.

Check the service manual, the one on CD.

First of all, diagnose your problem!! I've seen this caused by wiring issues many times.
