Take A Look At This Engine
 

I was browsing ebay and saw an unusual modification on this engine (scroll to the photos):

What are those pipes on the head at each cylinder? Some kind of cooling scheme? Ever seen this before?

just kidding. Looks like air pump for smog to me but is a very early car for smog. Maybe it is a later engine.

My 1967 German-spec Universal wagon had those.

I wonder if that car was originally marketed for California? By the early 1970s (MY 72?) air injection pumps were pretty common, but in the late 60s California cars were getting such things to comply with their one-off emission standards.

My mom's 73 Malibu (Arizona car) was laden with lots of crap, including an air injection pump, but my uncle's Impala (68 or 69 California car) had it as well. I lived in Arizona at the time and later worked on lots of cars of the late 60s, but none of the Arizona cars had that stuff.

This is very interesting. Was there an air pump somewhere?

What motor is that, Squiggie? I notice the oil filter is in a different position from my m180.

My 280s has the remnants of a similar system as well although the pipes have been removed from the head. An air pump (which on my car is no longer hooked up to anything and yet to be removed by lazy owner) sits just below the steering pump and is driven by the same belt.

There was no air pump, though it may have been removed. It was in a 1967 W110 230 wagon. I assumed it was the original engine.

I think that piping is on the wrong side of the head for A.I.R. systems. Ones I'm familiar with inject just downstream of the exhaust valve next to the exhaust manifold/head connection.

it must pump air into the combustion chamber by the plugs... the ports are on the other side. You could build a 10-1 engine and use those to inject water to prevent preignition. ...maybe. :D

I ended up selling that engine. The person who bought it said he wanted it because it was a "high compression" engine.
