RHD ?

Is there any difference between an engine (280 SE - M130 980-22-054384) that went into a RHD vehicle than one that went into a LHD vehicle? I just aquired the engine complete with motor mounts, alt, starter, fuel injection, and intake. I am trying to figure out if any of these parts are unique to a RHD vehicle, or if the only difference is the casting number. FYI the first 2 in the casting # indicates that the engine was originally in a RHD vehicle.

I obtained the engine from a guy who pulled it from a RHD 66 230SL. I think the engine originally came from a RHD W108.

I am not sure what I am going to do with it yet, just trying to figure out what I have.

Generally speaking, such items that may be in close proximity to the master cylinder, steering shaft or steering gear might be different, such as the exhaust manifolds.

I did not get the exhaust manifolds. It makes sense that any RHD unique parts where retained when this engine was swapped out. I wonder if the The oil filter housing might be RHD unique. I think I am going to tear it apart, save/sell the accessories, and recycle the block and head. The bosch mech fuel injection is probably worth saving, not sure about the rest of it. It only cost me gas money to pick it up, so I could not resist.

Engine was rebuilt once already. It reportedly ran when pulled, but blew the head gasket at the back of the engine by cylinder #6. I will know more once I pull the head off and have a look.

The routing of the manifold is different around the base so the exhaust pipes take a sightly different route to clear the steering box.

Only difference is the exhaust manifolds which point forwards in RHD cars.
The head for a 280SE/SL/SEL in good condition is worth hanging onto because they stopped making them years ago and they are damned hard to find. if the block is a SL block it is also worth keeping. The injection pumps without the two solenoids ( just one cold start solenoid) are also hard to find now too.

Great info, thanks. The engine looks good. It may not be rebuilt. It has a tag that says it is a replacement engine provided be MB Great Britain?? - am not sure exactly what that means. I know it came out of a 66 sl, I assumed it was rebuilt, but it may have been a new replacement

It could be either ,usually there is no engine number on those .But it all depends on if it runs or not.

If the injection pump has six pipes coming out of it it is a genuine SL engine, which is probably worth some real money. If you want to see what it is worth I suggest the 113 Mercedes forum.

The injector pump has the six outlets and appears to work on my work bench. I will ask on the sl forum and call the dealer and see what they can tell me. Thanks
