Cool 1972 Mercedes 280 SE 3.5

Hey Guys.. I'm new on here and here's my car I picked up a few weeks ago from him. He has too many cars and it was owned originally by his grandparents who owned the car since 1978!! I thought wow to myself! So I bought it and have been enjoying it...

It had some U-Haul truck barely back into the car. Hence.. the grill bent and the d/s front headlight was crushed but i recently found the part on eBay and the grill is on its way.. any tips on keeping these cars running great and i'm trying to drive it as much as I can within reason.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'll try to get some more photo's up shortly.. this was one today when out In La Jolla, CA.

P.S. yes i'm getting rid of the black side marker rubber.

Great car. The 3.5's are the hot rod Euro versions, the 4.5's are a little slower.

How is the car running now?

Here are some tips:

Check the owners manual.

These car's are maintenance intensive. Each front suspension joint has to be greased with a grease gun. Some of the steering linkage may also need this as well.

The front of the driveshaft needs to be greased. Check the rubber flexdisc between the trans and the driveshaft for cracks. If it has any, replace it.

The rear axle swing axle joint has two grease joints. Grease 'em.

The fuel filter needs to be replaced. It's close to the drivers side rear wheel.

Air filter, oil filter etc. Use Devlac or other diesel oil because modern oil does not have the additive ZDDP. Check the bottle. ZDDP can be purchased from Eastwood - Auto Body Repair Tools | MIG Welder | TIG Welder | Plasma Cutter | Auto Body Supplies & Accessories. It prevents excessive engine wear in older cars.

Change the transmission fluid. The torque converter needs to be drained as well. Rotate the engine and the drain plug will show up. Take the pan off and change the filter.

Get a set of metric hex socket bits as the car has lots of socket head screws. That's just the way it is.

Get a set of larger metric sockets as well.

Become familiar with the classic center.

Please post some more pictures. We love those cars.
