108 Coolant

Hi Guys, as told some days ago, I replaced the bad water pump and thermostat housing of my ´67 250 SE, I cant find coolant, as you told me I went for Valvoline Zerex G05, but its not marketed in Argentina by Valvoline, I also asked to Mercedes official shop, for ortiginal stuff A 000 989 08 25/10 as Classic center recommends, but unfortunelly they are out of stock due importantion restrictions on these days (I aslo was lokking for any cooolant of Mercedes service page 325.0, but none available.

So my question is, Until Zerex G05 was developed, wich coolant was ok for these engines, Im very worried about aliuminium corrosion, some of you may remember the mess was replacing cilinder "Gruyere" head some years ago!!

Any comment wil be very appreciatted

In the 1950s Daimler Benz advised adding 250mls of soluble oil to prevent corrosion if distilled water and anti corrosion fluid were not available. You can try that or ask the local tractor place if they nalco Alfloc 2000 coolant .
It is the next best thing to Mercedes own coolant you will find. Most large Mercedes,MAN and MTU engines use it.

G05 is great, but overkill for these old engines. I used Peak in my 108 with no issues. I had put in DexCool at one point without knowing better, that did cause issues, which a thorough flush (and then later an actual cleaning of the block once the heads were off) fixed. Prestone or Peak should be fine, just flush first and fill with the proper mix for a 50/50 ratio.

While G05 is required for many modern cars (current MBs, Chryslers, etc) older ones have no such need and never did, no plastic impeller pumps or plastic radiators or other issues that the modern cars run into. I even used Peak in Jeep and it is still clean and cool!

Tomguy,as he said his problem is getting hold of coolant protectant because of government legislation. I suggested Alfloc because you will find it anywhere in the World where there are Detroit diesels and catapillar earthmoving gear. In any W108 engine you can never be too cautious as these are approaching 50 years old now.

thanks for the input Guys, what do you think about Zerex original formula? (no G05 nor Dex cool? Valvoline Argentina seggested me that , but when I ask them if it meets MB standard, they didnt contact me again....mmmm.
Incredible, MB dealer in argentina no replyed any of my mails asking for replacement, I will contact Germany. wich is Alfloc brand? never heard about, but many heavy machines here.
Peak, never heard about it here too, I think no marketed in Argentina.
About soluble oil, I think it will no stop galvanic corrosion.

I did use Shellzone, but no good result.

What would need to use to flush engine? citric acid?

thanks and every comment will be welcomed.

Good luck with your search. As mercmad6.3 suggested, you might try the local CAT dealer, vs a generic truck/equipment mechanic. They (CAT) have an excellent global supply chain set up (and several other companies "ride along" with their parts system).

From that article, made me LOL at their source attributions:

"Following are statements from a variety of web sights such as Car Talk, Jiffy Lube, the back of anti-freeze containers, and other sources."

If you don't believe Click and Clack, there's always Jiffy Lube, or other sources.

In my day, LOL meant Little Old Lady, but in today's world it means Laughing Out Loud and has become waaaaaay overused.
