Any DIY guides? Brake pads esp.

Need new front pads on the 72 280SEL. Starting to grind on braking. Any DIY guide's, or videos?

Tips, etc are apreciated. Also, any preference on pads to order, also do I go shims, or no shims?

Thought I might also add this.

Washed the car today, and went for a drive downtown. Noticed upon breaking slowly to a stop, the front brakes are making a grinding sound. Nothing at highway speed, but just coming to a stop light.

Any ideas? Going to pull the wheel off tommorow and take pictures.

Just pads? Maybe crud build up?

If it's grinding, your pads are down to the backing plate. It's probably best to buy a Haynes or Chilton manual as this is pretty basic stuff.

Ok. Going to order some pads.

Do I need the shim or not?

Also they Hayes Manual is for the 6 cylinder only. Anyone know if the Chilton is V8 friendly?

Brakes are the same, if you buy quality pads, you will not need shims.

Well upon inspection, pads and rotors both look fine.

Decided to use brake cleaner and silicone spray on the rotors, cleaned them while spinning. This made the grind/grumble go away for about 10 miles, and it has now come back

Any ideas?

Could be old hard pads. Disc may have grooves/slight warping. If you end up replacing the pads, make sure pistons don't have crud on them before you push them back in the caliper. Otherwise you have a recipe for sticking calipers.
