W114 Vacuum pump M110 280C
My 300D has a vacuum pump, since it's a diesel, but why would a 4 stroke gas motor have one? Anyway, I took it off to install a new thermostat, and the drive key does not engage anyway. I would say it doesn't do anything! See attached pics.
Am I missing a part between the end of the cam drive and the vacuum pump key?

I'll have to double check when I get home but I believe you're missing a part. If memory serves me, there should be a roller which is engaged by the off sets on the front of the cam.
MB used a vacuum assist pump on the 280C engine to compensate for the low vacuum at idle which is inherent to the hemispherical combustion chambers. It's not really needed but MB had to meet US DOT standards. My '74 280C doesn't have a pump and uses only straight engine vacuum. |

It wouldn't surprise me if a part fell out and is missing. The PO decided to "fix" the thermostat by cutting it apart to allow maximum water flow. The car would never get above 145 Deg.

There's a transfer plate that engages the tabs on the cam and the nose of the pump--I've got one if you need it.
The M110's run fine with no vacuum pump--there's a sheet-metal plate and gasket that blanks off the cam tower opening--the plastic tubing with the check valve is plumbed in to the intake manifold Tim Kraakevik kraakevik@voyager.net Four 114's, Four M110's |

Well, I would like to try running the pump like it was originally designed. What are you asking for the part? If it's a bust then blank it off later.

Thanks Tim. You beat me to the answer. The pumps are rebuildable. You can get the kit from our sponsor. If Tim's got a complete used unit then I'd suggest you get one from him. There was a reason why the plate was removed.
The drive plate looks like a flattened rugby ball with a slot in the center and a notch on both ends (just in case you find some odd ball looking piece of metal in your future endeavors). |
