220s Shift Linkage Socket question
I believe I need to change the Automatic Transmission Shift Linkage Socket on a 1963 220s. The old one has turned to dust and the hot car has a hard time shifting past neutral into reverse or park.
I found the part but I can't find a diagram of how to remove the old socket. My manual does not describe this shift mechanism. Any body have such a diagram they can share? Or advice? Do I try to replace the socket while it is inside the steering column? Do I remove the entire mechanism from behind the steering wheel or at the other end of the column? Your help is appreciated. |

Do you mean the bushing on the shifting arm? If so, just remove the large chrome nut, pull the arm and replace the bushing.
There are also two vulcannun (sp?) bushings on the shifting column inside the steering hub. You have to pull the steering wheel and part of the steering hub to replace those. Symptoms of this malfunction is intermittent sounding of the horn and front to back slop in the shifting action. Search around for "intermittent horn" or such. There are a couple of DIY write-ups floating around. If it's the bushings/sockets on the shifting rod, just pop them off the knuckle, screw them off, screw the new ones on, and pop them back on. I think one end is a reverse thread.
