Transmission cases

Why is there a change in Case material from Cast iron to Aluminum/alloy?
Specifically the W116 transmissions, 73-5 cast iron to 76-80 Aluminum? Strength? weight? Economical influences? Which is better?

just silly don't know, so I should ask type stuff...

My vote would be weight - but I don't really know for sure.

I thought they were always aluminum.

Not the manual transmissions. The older 'boxes had a cast iron centre bit.

The manual gearboxes were procured from different manufacturers. From what I understand the switch to Getrag gearboxes was done for cost reasons.
