power steering leak, unusual?

I've done the research and there is a lot of info on power steering leaks but this one I cannot find an answer to. The car is a 1963 220s. The leak is coming from the spot where the steering column enters the steering assembly. Any of you have some experience with this? I am hoping there is a way to try some things before I have to remove the entire assembly.

Thanks for your help,
David

I accidentally added this post to the end of an old thread. I'm stupid that way.

you need to get the box resealed, preferably by someone who has done mercedes boxes before . The 220 has the same steering box as the W108 and W109 so there are plenty about.

I have just done my steering gear box of the W109. If it is the same box I can tell how it works.
Your shaft seal is leaking and you need to replace all seals except probably the two teflon rings (I didn't do them)
First you need to get the reseal kit for your box, then you remove your gear box . Then resealing starts.
It is good if you have a clean place (that you will mess up with lots of ATF spills when you take the box apart) and a bigger vice to hold the box during the process. It is also good go get a small 'tub' for disassembly because a lot of AFT will come out.

The first thing is to locate where the leak is coming from, if it is from the pump then yes it may need to be replaced, but it could be just a seal that needs replacing, If you cannot locate the leak pop it to a garage they should not charge just to look for a leak. Then get them to give you a price for the job.

Hope that helped you!!

Pulling the steering box is not hard but it is heavy. Very heavy.

Make sure you have some help when you are putting it back in since the weight makes it hard to line up by yourself.

But with two people there is not much to it.
