Engine sounds like tractor

I recently bought a project 1971 mercedes to restore (was my fathers old car). I love this car, but the engine sounds like a tractor (chug chug chug noise).

Any thoughts on how to resolve this issue (timing, fan, oil change, etc..?)

Which model? Have you verified that you're not driving an actual tractor?

Is it a diesel? It could be nailing. Is it a gasser? It could be fuel, spark. On either, timing (IP or ignition), exhaust leaks, etc. Let us know more info!

Those are typically identified by the letters V-O-L-V-O on the rear, but points in his favor for identifying the agricultural engine just by sound.

1971 Mercedes 250 sedan. You know it's more of a "clicking" noise. The muffler has holes in it so that could def make it worse, but it sounds like it is originating in the engine. I inherited a timing gun, gonna try this next.

Could be valves needing adjustment, could be exhaust leak at manifold gasket, could be cracked manifold...

You can narrow it down using a few rudimentary diagnostic tools: a three foot section of garden hose held to your ear will isolate where the noise is coming from, as would a two foot 3/4" dowel pressed up against parts of the valve cover or manifold.

Needless to say, keep them away from moving belts and the fan, and if you're not sure of how to narrow down the source of a rhythmic tapping/clacking noise, ask someone who is experienced to help out...

Well they do tend to sound like tractors. My daughter stated at one time years ago. She could always hear me pulling into the driveway. To her it sounded like a tractor and I somewhat agreed.
