1966 W111 rear lights
A couple of questions regarding the rear light assemblies on my 66 250SE coupe.
1. the chrome? finish is almost worn away on the lens frames they look like they are some sort of plastic, how do I dismantle the lens from the frames so that I can get the frames refinished? 2. Anyone know where I could get new seals (light assembly to body) for these lights? |

The lenses are heat-welded in place and cannot come out and be reused, well not easily anyway. You would need to dremel out the inner lip that holds them in, all the way around, and then glue them back in place later. The aftermarket lenses simply glue in place but quality and fit varies. The bezel is chromed metal, not plastic.
I forget what I found out when I checked on seals but the Classic Center should be a good resource for these. Otherwise you will need some very good ones from a parts car which won;t be easy as they can dry out over time, split or shrink.

Thanks for the information, I have seen repro lenses for sale so presumed that you could dismantle the unit, I have had a brief look and couldnt see how to take the lens out I did see an area where it looks like there were plastic posts on the lens which protruded through the frame and have then been melted to retain the lens, if its going to be a tricky job then I will probably stay with the worn chrome.
How do I conact the Classic Center you mention? I doubt if I will find a decent set of used seals, I have considered getting a sheet of neoprene or something simular and trying to make some if all else fails. Thanks again |

Mercedes-Benz Classic Center USA
Address: 9 Whatney, Irvine, CA 92618 Phone: (949) 598-4850 Hours: Mon-Fri 8am–4pm Sat-Sun Closed Some of the repros aren't even cast in color but merely painted on the reverse so there is no perfect solution at present, not until they start producing a new run. I should note that last I heard CC had the amber tip lenses available as NOS (those are very costly) but they do not have the all red units. Good luck and let us know if they were able to assist you on the seals!

I'm not sure mine are like this but I want all red lenses without the amber indicator lens.
For some unknow reason the car when I found it had a ll red lens on one side and red with amber indicator on the other I have never been able to find out why, but anyway the chrome is almost worn away on both tail lights By the way the car is not this dirty now this is how I found it. |

Sedan lights are different and won't fit, also some will claim that W113 (Pagoda SL like 230sl and 280sl) use the same lens but not the same bezel tho they look very similar. Look down from the top and you will see the coupe has a curve to the top of the chrome trim while the SL is almost straight. Somebody probably replaced with amber because it was all they could find at the moment. All red came on early cars, amber came a bit later.
Do you have clear or amber bullets on the front?

I guess my car would have been UK spec as it is R/H drive I think it would have originally had all red lenses how someone managed to drive it with one of each here in the UK without getting pulled over I have no idea, although the car has been off the road for 20 years and the previous owner has passed away so I cant ask him, its possible he had to find a tail light and only found an amber one.
Because my car is UK spec it doesnt have the bullet lights on the front, it has the tall one piece headlights and the pilot light is built into them. |

I guess you still have the car? Thread resurrection UK cars, did come with amber rears, that's how mine is, and I know they're original, as it's been in the family for 40 years. Cheers. |
