What are these items under theed hood? W108

Please help me identify and understand its importance and necessity.

The items mounted on the engine wall near the carbs both have broken rubber fittings. They are then connected to a nipple to the side of the carbs. (1st and 2nd pics)

What is this wiring under the carbs? (2nd pic)

On the distributor, I noticed an open nipple. (3rd pic)

Thanks

On the fender well are emissions/timing control solenoids. When the temperature sender/RPM count/AC compressor on the car activates the solenoids they allow vacuum to be applied to the distributor diaphragms (which is what picture # 3 is showing) as needed to retard or advance the ignition timing. They reduce the car's emissions while cold. U.S. EPA stuff which weren't very effective and rarely still work. They did allow the car to pass the import requirements so they were installed.

Necessary? Strictly speaking, if your state requires ALL the emissions equipment to be functioning, then yes. I doubt if you can find an inspector who even knows about those so removal/disabling them is an option.

If you decide to eliminate the solenoids and connect both diaphragms on the distributor, the "advance" diaphragm gets connected to carburetor vacuum (only has vacuum under acceleration) and the "retard" gets ported vacuum (has constant vacuum at idle and drops under acceleration). Use a timing light to determine which diaphragm is which.

The wire is for the electric choke warming element. It allows for faster opening of the air restricting plate used to enrich the initial air/fuel mixture.

Thanks for the information. What do you mean the "retard" gets ported vacuum? So... I would connect the advance to the carbs once I remove the solenoid connection?

Thanks

Yes... the newest trick in the "book". I constantly clean the motor. Although there isn't any leakage in the engine bay I do the Simple Green and toothbrush dance often.
