w115 power window keeps falling off regulator
Hello,
I have a 75 w115 300d and the front passenger window has a big issue. while lowering the window it will suddenly fall. It stays on the track/ channel, but falls completely off the regulator and I have to open up the door panel and put it back on the regulator. Do I need a new regulator? Is it some other sort of problem, like the window channel being worn ? Has anybody had a similar problem? Also, if it is the regulator, can these regulators be repaired or must it be replaced? Mine has manual windows, so perhaps it is different but there is no way the window could fall off the regulator unless the track at the bottom of the window was bent and/or the vinyl bushing that slides in that track was missing or broken. If the track is bent it would probably be difficult to straighten well enough that the window would work smoothly. If the vinyl bushing is simply broken or missing you can get those from the dealer for a couple of dollars. They come as a kit that includes all the parts you need.
I am not sure what you mean by "stays on the track/channel but falls completly off the regulator", so perhaps I missunderstand your issue. The vinyl bushing I am talking about slides in the metal track attached to the bottom of the window. Is that where it seperates from the regulator? Another possibility is that the regulator itself is broken or not attached to the door properly. If the regulator pivots or twists it is possible that it could slide off the end of the track a the bottom of the window. When you pulled the door panel off did you look in the bottom of the door for broken parts? It might help to have a look at the drivers side and see what is different. Hope this helps. |

Take the interior door panel off. Once you removed that, you can easily see what happens. It might be that some bolt is loose.
Good luck, Bert

Thanks for the info, if it stops raining tomorrow I'll open up the door panel and look at it again.
Basically what happens is the glass lifts out of the regulator the regulator stays up and just the plane glass slides to the bottom of the door. Last time I fixed it I did a quick roadside repair but tomorrow I'll check to see if the regulator stays in the track. |

Here are a couple of pictures from a drivers side manual window. At the end of the arm in the first picture is where the bushing is that I was talking about. The track is closed, so it could not slide past the end. The second picture is from looking down the track and you can see the white bushing I was referring to. It is held on with a clip that can be hard to attach. You can't see the clip from this angle, it is between the door skin and the window frame. I suspect that clip has broken or is not secured properly. You will probably find the clip in the bottom of the door. You might take the oportunity to clean the track and put some new grease in it. I use white litheum grease. The grease hardens over time and in my experience that is why the windows stop working properly.
The other possibility is that the frame/track has seperated from then glass itself. If I recall correctly the window is glued to a frame and then that frame is bolted to the track. Perhap your glue has failed or the two bolts that hold the window frame to the track have sheered. |

I finally got the door apart again and took some pics. Seems the problem is that the regulator is out of alignment, so when the window is up the gear scrapes against the inside metal of the door, and when the regulator is down, it does not align with the stop, going inside the stop (and down too low).
Has anyone had this problem, is the regulator fixable if I pull it out of the door or does it need replacement? see pics below |

It looks like your regulator is pretty badly bent. Best thing would be to find a good used unit and replace it.
Depending on where the warp is, I have been able to restore a regulator by bending it back into position using a vice, but some situations would require you to completely disassemble the regulator with its spring and peened fastener to get the right grip. The aluminum cast metal MB used is probably permanently fatigued in any case, and the repair might not last very long. I think these regulators fail by over-aggressively hitting the stops with that powerful little motor. I have to be careful on my w123 because every once and a while the window switch will stick. The regulator I re-bent on my w108 is still working but I haven't used it much since I fixed it. Do yourself a favor and find a good used unit.
