My new 1972 280SE 4.5

Hey guys,

Something about these cars captured my attention a while back. I found this car for sale and drove it home roughly 800 miles on Friday.

In a single word, they are "Stately"

Webster Def.- large, grand, spacious, lofty, imposing, elevated, high, majestic, magnificent, sumptuous, palatial, opulent, superb, luxurious, monumental, impressive.

I agree. I plan to see how the paint looks underneath. If it can be buffed out they are coming off.

I'm not crazy about the color matched hub caps on the red cars. Luckily the previous owner had picked up 5 of the "Bundt" style wheels. They need to be refinished though.

In fact, the previous owner pretty much filled the car up with bits, pieces and documentation..

I do have some slight temperature issues while the AC s on. The needle seems to normally sit just above the 3/4 mark. With the AC on it starts to slowly climb up. What is the normal operating temperatures for these? I'm in Arizona, 105 degree temperatures tend to punish cooling systems. Can one normally spin the fan clutch by hand when cool on these cars? I need to check that the electric fan in front is working.

Is there anything out of the ordinary with the cooling systems on these I should check?

Thanks,
Ryan

Yeah, but they grow on you...they really look cool if they are coupled with WW tires..which was common back then.
I remember those cars when they came out new...

The electric fan should come on w/ac actiation....check the fuse and the sw on top of the drier.

Beautiful. I actually like red ones. I think 108's look better in dark colors. I'd remove the wheel chrome too if I could although if it were me I'd not replace the correct wheels with Bundts. Also a matter of taste I know, that steering wheel would be the first I'd replace. Anyway. You really are lucky to have found such a nice one. How about some details. How'd you find it? Where was it? Price? And where in AZ are you? I'm in Phoenix and it's been 110 the last couple of days out my way. Any car in AZ will need good air and I'd imagine the only color combo that could be worse than that for heat would be Black on Black.

- Peter.

Great find, how many miles on her? The W108's are truly "stately" as Arthur said, they are one of the few cars that remain ageless, you never get tired of looking at them.

When your trying to verify your front auxiliary fan operation be aware that there is a safety switch that will disengage the fan's operation if the hood is open. Mine (6 cylinder mechanical fuel injected model) is located on the drivers side just in front of the wiper motor along side of the brake booster:

The saftey switch that 280SEguy is talking about was deleted with the 4.5 model in favor of a protective shroud covering the auxiliary fan blades. Also, the auxiliary fan does not automatically engage when the AC is turned on--it has a 206 degree temperature switch that activates it (p83-12/3 of service manual).

If the viscous clutch on your main cooling fan is functioning properly and your radiator is not clogged with accumulated crud, your temperature guage should show lower than you described. An out of body radiator flush might be in order.

Just a note on the chrome wheel arch enhancements. The mighty 600 had them. So did some preceeding versions of the 300 coupe/convertible.

berfinroy, thanks for the clarification on the 4.5, I wasn't sure the 4.5 was located in the same position (or if there was a safety switch on it). Just trying to help a fellow W108 owner.

That is a coolant temp sw. and that works regardless of a/c operation...but there should also be a switch on top of the refrigerant reciever/drier that also triggers fan during high termal load of a/c system.............

I personally like the wooden steering wheel better than the 60's left over that came factory. However the wooden wheel is smaller than the factory wheel. It restricts my view of the gauges, which is annoying.

I found it online. The car was located near San Francisco, CA. I picked it up Friday and drove home to Gilbert, AZ the same day.

The PO was kind enough to take the car to his shop and have them freshen the AC before I flew in, so it blows cold.

I haven't gone through the documents thoroughly, but the odometer reads 66000 miles and the PO says the car has 166000.

The car has a worklog in the glove compartment that dates back to '86 with every service listed. I also have a 4" binder full of receipts.

My last toy was an 85.5 Porsche 944, which was also red on black vinyl. I guess i'm used to the heat.

Yep, my fan is shrouded. It won't take long for the car to reach 206 degrees.

I'll plan on pulling the radiator and having it cleaned. Although, i'm tempted to upgrade the A/C electric fan, replace the mechanical fan clutch and put in a completely new radiator.

Overheating in the desert is not something to take lightly...

Thanks,
Ryan
