original "tuner" wheels
I have a 73 450 sl, with the original 14" "bundt cake" type wheels. I like that they're the original wheels, but sometimes would like to go with a bigger wheel/lower profile tire. Were there any wheel combinations like this that were used in the mid 70s by tuners for this car? Anything that would give me the more agressive set up but still be period appropriate? Thanks.

Aftermarket wheels were not a huge business, but a good wheel to put on the car if you want to evoke tacky 70-80s is the BBS. Something two peice, or maby an AMG rim. The AMG five star... Anyway, your best bet to do is possibly front the big bucks and go for the elusive 15" Bunt Cakes, ala 6.9....

All the new wheels have huge offsets that don't work on the older MB cars. I'm in the same boat with my '75 450SE. I've done a ton of research and this is what I can tell you:
Current wheels that fit: - Brabus Monoblock II in 15x7 ET25 - Ronal R31 in 15x7 and 16x7 - AMG Aero 1s are said to work in 16x7.5 per TireRack's website Older aftermarket wheels no longer made: - Ronal R9s (original AMG) - AMG Aero 1s in 16x8 ET 11 which are no longer made and extemely rare in this offset - BBS euromesh style wheels. Watch out with these if you come across some used ones as some are the metric 390mm diameter and require Michelin TRX tires that are very hard to get now days. Other MB wheels that I've seen on W107s: - the 8 and 15-slot OEM chrome wheels look nice especially with the modifiers. Other styles may work with spacers. I constantly scope out Ebay. Often times some treasures become available. The Ronal website has several that fit the early W107s in up to 18" diameter and they have pictures. |

Check out Ebay and the auction for the Momo mercedes wheels. Wheels with this offset that fit the older W107 and W116s are extremely rare. I'm tempted to bid on them even though I don't need wheels.

Lorinser made some 15 and 16 inch wheels (flat face, 15 hole) that had just a bit of a lip on them. Very tough to find though.

I recall seeing a post about six months ago from Aaron Greenberg indicating that several sets of 15" bundt cakes were available from Star Motors. I believe the cost was about $500/wheel.

The new issue of The Star has a big section on wheels.
