W115 heater with pics
I've read a lot of about the heaters on these and methods to get them working, etc. Mine doesn't work.
I'm digging into it today and thought I'd take a couple pics for those that need the visual (like me) to go with the descriptions. I have mine all sprayed now the some lube, PB Blaster. The fan certainly turns much easier now, by hand, than it did when I first tried turning it. Still nothing when I turn on the switch though. I pulled the electrical connector for it on the inside of the firewall and tested the contacts with a little 12v tester, the kind that looks like a screwdriver and has a bulb in the handle. I got nothing. But, maybe it's more complicated than that? Does anyone know about the wiring for these? And why do people say to drip ATF fluid in there, and how would you get it in there anyways?

crojack, you inspired me to deal with my "dead" heater blower. Where I live in Northern AZ, we hit freezing last night and the car windows were frosted - so I thought I had better get the blower going or go to plan B (a replacement motor or blower "scheme")
With the info given by MikeD on the other crojack heater thread, I accessed the fan through the intake outside the car. I cut an access hole to the motor. My fan was very hard to turn, but not rusted out. I first used Brake Cleaner, then I used WD40 then I used a lightweight oil. I was skeptical but even the 3 speed switch got it running no problem!! I was really pleased. I put it all back together, covered my access hole with aluminum tape. Now I need to deal with the fact that I have heat on one side of the car but not the other. I already went through the heater control valves, rebuilt it with new O-Rings. I guess I will need to try to flush out or Back Flush out the heater core, if that be the issue. The Air control from Defrost to Floor works, but the temp on the bad side just does not get very warm. Always something on a 43 year old car - step by step!

Did you cut the access "hole" through the metal rain guard thing below the leaf guard?
And how big of a hole did you cut?

I took a dremel with a cutoff wheel on it, cut about a 1.25" square hole near the peak of the rain guard. Big enough to get a flash light beam in and access to spray it with brake cleaner and lube by way of a long applicator.

you can drip ATF out of the end of a straw or similar. Tophers idea is a good one as well. If its toast there are some retrofits, not easy , but they have been done.
You really need to make sure you are getting 12V . You need a tester that will measure DC , car key has to be on . Test plug end . the brown is the ground in MB. Could be your switch or fuse , rule those out

I've been looking around the interwebs at options and did find this some small universal heaters that may fit. It would require removing the whole rain guard but I'm ok with that.
Topher39: How much air is the fan pushing, does it seem like a lot? I'm sure it's better than nothing but have read that even when working great, they don't move a lot of air.

It sounds from the outside of the car, that it is moving a lot of air, inside much quieter but it does push some decent air - not a blast but does the job.
Did you try and get your fan running? You can jump the fan directly from the two wires leading to the fan, as accessed from the outside vent, to see if you can get it working, then check wires connections if necessary from there. I never expected to get my fan working as quickly as I did. It seemed that most of the issue with my fan was just the sticky, dry grease in the fan motor from age. Chris

Haven't got it to work yet. I think I'm going to drill a hole, similar to your method and try to get some lube directly on the motor. So far I've blindly sprayed it up in there. I'll keep you posted. If not than I have checked out some fans that I think could be mounted in the same place.
Congrats on getting yours to work!

Sounds good. Yes, you really need an access point to get the job done, surprised that the factory did not build one in really.
Cold out today in AZ - was below freezing and it took a bit to get the old girl going without the cold start mechanism. Chris

you have verified that all the electronics are good, 12 V , Switch?

I tried a simple tester on the electronics on the inside of the firewall. Got nothing. Also dug down behind the center console and no power to the ac switch either. How do you get the heater blower switch out? Does the dash have to come out?
Any place else to check? Fuses are good.

check 12 v on both sides of fuse , from there go to switch. Switch comes out of dash with bezel removal. Sounds to me that you verify power to fan before drilling

I'll check that when I get a chance. Heater didn't work yesterday morning, but it sure didn't smell good with all the stuff I sprayed on it coming up through the defrost vents!!
Can I just use the tester light or do I need a multimeter?

I picked up a simple multimeter this weekend. I tried it on the switch wires on the switch wires on the inside of the firewall. All I got was in the 0.7 range, give or take a point here or there. I'm guessing it should be in the 12 range? The fuse was fine.
I was also told it could be the AC switch? Is this the one behind the center console?
