heater installation, w108

I'm reinstalling the heater box and fan in my 250S and now that I have it in place, I'm not sure if the rubber gasket on the top of the fan just butts up to the hole under the dash or has to be pulled through and around the flange on the hole. Can someone let me know if I should try to work the rubber up and around the inside of the hole? I've got it in place and don't really want to pull it back out to figure it out. Thanks!

Mine is not pulled through. (71 W108 280SE)

The entire fan and gasket are below the flange.

I was in that area above the fan recently when I took off the cowl panel and cleaned all the leaves and crud out. I POR-15'd the drain well area and seams as a preventative measure.
