w108/M130 -need a mechanic recommendation in SF Bay area
Hi,
I'm used to working on cars from the late 80s and 90s. I tried my best to set my timing but its still seems to be a few degrees off. The car misses under certain loads. The engine is also not as vibration free as the BMW inline 6s that I'm used to. I figured, before I do a compression check, I need the valves adjusted properly... I need a mechanic recommendation in the SF, San Jose area to double check my timing and also do a valve adjustment. Anyone? Thanks, Narayan |

Moby,
Get a timing light and D.I.Y. this is too easy and I wish to save you some $$$ (actually you do not need the light this can be done by ear (pre ignition ping/knock)) |

Go to oreillys or autozone for a timing light. Get one with an advance mechanism, and leave it on zero for the time being... making sure it stays on zero.... later you will appreciate this feature.
Check on how to do it... forgot if you need to disconnect the advance.... As for recommendation, we tried both first rated places recommended here for SF and we were not very happy by how we dealt with the car and us.... There is a good shop in Burlingame, but a few more in SJ... let me check the link it is in the general discussion http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/california/ and http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/california/149335-mechanic-san-francisco-ca.html

I read that thread a while ago. The shop in Milpitas that was recommended turned out to be fairly ignorant of w108s. Campbell Mercedes repair didn't seem a good fit and anal enough. I didn't just call. I stopped by the shops. A lot of the recommendations are a few years old, so I just wanted to see if any one had any fresh recomendations...

If I was in SJ, we could meet.... stumbling can be an easy fix or tricky....
Tom's Mercedes Benz 108/109 Resource Site Always start with the less expensive / involved part.... gas, fuel filter, the new gas with ethanol is a real headache, I had a few filters plugged up as the gas gelled, so I now uses the stabil for ethanol. Vacuum leaks will create a nice erratic vibration.

Update: I took the car to Al Bernal at Mercedes Connexion. He set the timing, adjusted the valves, set the injector pump timing, cleaned the injectors and fixed a few vacuum leaks. The car runs much better. A chassis lube + re adjusting the wheel bearings fixed my wandering problem. He also adjusted the tranny shifting and the car shifts silky smooth now. The best part is the price he charged me! He doesn't for the time spent diagnosing the problem... It did take some time for him to do all the work, but was worth the time.
