220/8 W115 Leaking Transmission

Hi All,

I'm noticing a moderate leak coming from the rear of my manual 4-speed transmission, I can't tell if it's the gasket or the rear seal. I plan to change both, leaving the transmission attached.

I have a good idea of how to do this, but I'd appreciate any tips anyone might have who has done this project themselves. I also don't know, yet, the size of the 4 pin spanner that I need--I'm not sure if these varied, but if anyone knows the dimensions this would be helpful. I believe this is the only special tool required?

Cheers

If it has been leaking for some time then replace the rear mount while you have it apart. ATF turns the mount rubber into goo. There are ,of course, 2 possible sizes of retaining nut. Do a search on the forum for the special tool number required. The original nut was "staked"" after installation and you'll need to remove the tang which was formed before removal. If it has been replaced then the new nut is a locking nut with a plastic insert type retainer. You can re-use the old nut using Loc-Tite (blue) or similar thread locker, You still should re-punch the tang after torquing.

I just did this on my '74. I borrowed the socket from my local Indy. I believe it was the 32MM size.

On my 220, standard trans, I find I have a leak from the o-rings/seals on the gear levers - on my list of things to do - not a bad leak but a leak that needs attention.

My leak appears to be coming from the gasket and not the main seal. It's funny, when I top off with fluid I loose A LOT of it the next day or so, I'm not sure what this could indicate if anything...

Mike D,

Would it be possible for me to measure the retaining nut without fist removing the drive shaft?

Cheers
