W111 230S Newbie

As I await the arrival of my 230S (coming to CT from WA), I need to order some parts and prepare a list for my mechanic. I received this information from the seller

Engine oil: 10/40, and it's fairly fresh, low miles.
Transmission: Needs changing
Coolant: new, replaced after draining the system for heater box rebuild.
Brake fluid: worth replacing, it's old.
Differential: never checked.
Power steering fluid: stays full, doesn't leak, not sure what is there.
Chassis lube: should be checked.
Air filters: should be checked.
Fuel filters: should be replaced.

He's had it for 2-years and rarely drove it because he left the country for 9 months. The previous owner was the grand daughter of the original owner and the service records indicate it was properly cared for by the local M-B dealer. Including a valve job at 111,000 kms.

Can you folks tell me what is recommended for each one of these routine service tasks including where I can get the proper filters? It has the original dual carbs still mounted.

Hello!

Welcome to the forum! Our host sells all the parts you mentioned. We try to purchase here whenever possible since they provide this forum.

May I suggest check all of your rubber fuel lines. 40 year old rubber can leak gas and catch fire!

You should check your oil frequently. Older cars use oil between changes. Low oil can damage the engine.

Best regards,

Jeffrey

I guess it is more than obvious that Peach Parts has the easy replacement parts for sure. And I'll make sure to patronize them. I guess I'm curious more about what to do and what oils/fluids to use. I don't think I can rely on the owner's manual for current thinking...

I thought the 230 was W110?

The 200, 200D, 230 and 230S models

anyway welcome... you should be able to find most parts locally if you do some general research, I've found Wix oil filters and some other things locally around town(master cylinder transmission filter call your local aftermarket store (oreily's autozone, napa etc), these cars are pretty easy to own and operate provided you have no major leaks and or suspension/bushing issues. make sure you grease all the fittings, and check the swing axle pivot points and rubber seal as you do not want to be involved in having that changed or fail( may exceed value of car depending on shape its in.)

The 230 is a W110, but the 230S is a W111.

Transmission (even if it's a manual) and power steering both use ATF. Differential and rear axle uses a hypoid gear oil- my personal preference is Redline Shockproof synthetic. Make sure you have the car and rear axle level when you fill it. If you let the axles "dangle", your diff will be over full when going down the road.

You should be able to get all your parts thru Peach Parts.

Thanks for your help

If you should come across a right side mirror for a Fintail, I'm looking for one. Missed one on eBay Germany (I used a Sniper and should have won it). Bummer.

I think you can buy a new outside right side mirror assembly (110 810 10 16) new from The Classic Center for about $80. They must have lowered the price because the last time I checked I thought it was nearly $200.
