1969 220 muffler -1 or 2 part?
My 220 has a a 14" mid pipe and a 24" end glass packs for an exhaust system. I got the car like that and it's ok sound wise, not too loud, sounds normal enough. I need to replace the glass pack on the end, has a few small holes coming through and the pipe has the same.
Question, stock muffler a better way to go? I find replacement mufflers, but I found one image that shows a mid muffler and a muffler at the end - I find no mid mufflers as replacements. Did the stock 220 have one or two silencers in line? I guess I could keep the mid point glass pack and use the stock replacement muffler? What's a good, economical choice? Quiet is good! Chris

As you have probably determined, the OEM configuration was an oval bodied resonator forward of the rear axle, and a 7" round rear muffler. That rear muffler is in fact a "glass pack", with a perforated (not louvered) center tube, and glass fiber filling. A bit spendy but quite durable. |

Frank - Sounds like I could just get a new glass pack for the rear and call it a day.
I found the stock muffler for about 1/2 price ($75), new, at a discount auto parts site but I am having problems finding the resonator in stock. i guess if the glass pack resonator / muffler works why "fix" . . .? I wonder how quiet the stock system would be compared to these glass packs. Thoughts?

Here are some P/Ns from an old CarQuest catalog. These are OEM style replacement #s, and may convert to other manufacturer's P/Ns. Resonator (forward of axle): 260513, or 270925 Rear muffler: 101021 The OEM type resonator makes a big difference compared to an aftermarket "Cherry Bomb" type glasspack used in the forward location; it attenuates in specific ranges and yields a noticeably quieter exhaust. By contrast, the rear muffler reduces the overall sound level at all frequencies. If I were doing the replacement, I would choose the OEM type parts when available. |

I sure would like to find a stock resonator - I posted on the wanted thread.
I will poke at those numbers you gave me. Thanks Frank Chris

Hey Topher,
What did you end up going with and where did you find it? Cheers, |

Well . . . I am still thinking but I found Rock Auto has the muffler (Bossel) for $95 shipped. I did find a resonator/pipe from some place Classic "something" for $120 shipped. (I need to find that link again). I think I will replace the muffler first and see how it sounds with the Non-Stock glass pack resonator on the car now. I can deal with $95 but I don't want to drop another $120 if I can help it.
I have my son's braces to pay for this week . . . needless to say I need to take care of that "nut" first! Chris

Coastal, I just ordered the Ansel brand muffler for my 1969 220 - I am going to start with that - currently I have an aftermarket glass pack for a resonator. I can't find an inexpensive "stock" resonator, so if this muffler plays nice with the non-stock resonator I will be set. I want it quiet. Right now the 2nd Glass pack that is working as a muffler is starting to rust out. I spent $79 delivered.

Thanks for letting me know. I recently replaced my rotted out muffler with a Bosal but left all the pipes (which are solid) and resonator. I'm still not crazy about the sound, though it is better. I'm 99% sure I've isolated and corrected all the leaks. So I suppose it's a combination of a mediocre muffler and a 43 year old resonator. All in all I suppose this isn't not bad, but when the pipes start to go I'll definitely do full stainless.

My ANSA "stock" Muffler should arrive today. Tomorrow I should recieve a new, 24" glasspack resonator, it's a Walker "Thrush" I believe. Right now I have a 14" glass pack as a resonator and it's not loud, I am hoping the larger 24" resonator will be even more mellow when coupled with the new "stock" muffler. I will give it a try - I need to keep this on a "down low" budget. Too bad I can't find a decent price "stock" resonator.

Finally got around to the muffler replacement - very happy. Stock muffler, joined to a 24" thrush Glasspack as a resonator - quiet, both on the highway and local driving. Cost me $125 total, buddy did the welding or me. Crossing that off my list!
