w114/w115 Shock Choices
Ok, I have read a little bit about shocks for my w115 and what I read is that unless they are Bilstiens they are worthless . . . I am on a budget, and $100+ per shock on this '69 is a bit much right now. What would be a decent shock that I can utilize without spending so much.

I bought Gabriel for my 300D from autozone. They came with a lifetime warranty and cost $25 / corner. Only drove the car for a few months before I sold it but the shocks worked well while I drove it.

Nothing else will handle the performance of a 220D?

LOL His is not a diesel, it's gas. The high performance version...
Panda may still have a good point. I have installed a dozen different spring/shock/strut combinations on my tacoma 4x4. Based on that experience I can tell you that slight changes in spring rate and shock valving can make a big difference in performance. If the Bilstein shocks are valved to complement the mercedes springs and the KYB's are not it can make a big difference. Ride quality is very subjective. If you are on a budget I am sure the KYB's will work. You may even prefer the ride. Based on what I have read it sounds as if the bilstein's are the best bet if your goal is to maintain the stock ride. New KYB's will be a huge improvement over worn out shocks. They just may not provide the ride/feel the mercedes designers where shooting for. |

Thanks for the input. I am looking for a good ride, not to hard or "sporty" more of a soft ride.
I welcome any input I can get, especially from those who have crossed this bridge before and no the ride charectoristics.

I put a set of KYBs on a '71 250/8 years ago and thought they were fine.

Well I have put them on all of mine. The 300SD. The 220 and the 450. All I am saying is I have tried others but never to satisfaction. I will admit I did not try the KYB

Panda, I only mention my KYB experience with the W114/115 chassis because the OP asked for opinions from people who "have crossed this bridge" -- not because I question your experience in any way. Just clarifyin' if need be ...

I mention the KYB because of the positive feedback and experience from Maki - I also mention it because the KYB shocks seem to have the same basic structure/technology as the Bilstiens but are about 1/2 the price at $45 (best price on a quick search). I did note on one site that they had the rears for the 220 sedan, but the fronts they kept stressing for was for the "Wagon" - that was just one site, perhaps the 220 sedan version was not in stock.
I do want a good ride that "works" with the design of the car, within a reasonable budget. I will do some more poking around and compare to the Bilstiens.

Bonus - $30 rebate if you purchase 4, free shipping. Here is the Link right from Just Suspension, this site shows the standard 220 AND the Wagon Shock. Still going to compare these to Bilstiens as it relates to the overall design of the shock.
If anyone is interested. KYB

Just to toss an alternative opinion out there, here's one from 2004:
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vintage-mercedes/108550-w115-front-shocks-bilstein-kyb-sachs.html Lots of opinions out there, and not everyone agrees. I'd rank KYB Gas Adjust shocks with Bilstein HD in terms of firmness, FWIW. Bilstein Comforts and Sachs/Boge are softer. I've used KYBs on a couple of cars. The ride isn't unpleasant at all, IMO. My experience is that Sachs and Bilstein comforts aren't as durable as heavy-duty shocks. An old friend told me he put Monroe shocks on his W111 and W108, and I never heard him say they didn't live up to his expectations. |
