w116 window "brushes"
 

My window brushes are pretty shot. I dont drive the car and when I wash it i end up taping off the bases of the windows to prevent water from getting into the door. I have slight rust showing at the base of one of my door and I am certain this is a result of the aged window bushes.

Does anyone know where to get new ones? If Benz still makes these or are there aftermarket sources.

I got my horizontal window brush for my 108 from mb, parts number was 115-725-09-65. I assume you're dealing with the same material.

I think it was $70 for 2 meters or so.

thanks guys. I also got a great answer from w116.org. Though it sounds like if i can get just the brush material for $70 that seems reasonable.

"The insides and outsides are interchangeable, so I'd find some from the inside of a wrecking yard car, and put them on the outside, since the inside ones seem to last indefinitely. This is what I did with my own car. Otherwise, I think the dealer is the only place you can get them, and as I remember, they are something like $50 a piece!"

JCWhitney sells generic window "brushes". I got the kind with the chrome strip at the top and they worked perfectly.

By the way, the W116 uses part number 116 726 00 65 for the brushes, cut to size (look at your old ones, the ends are not cut square, but slightly angled to help seal better). W108, etc. doesn't fit it. And don't let some of the online stores fool you; there are 8 per car, not 4, but usually the inner 4 last indefinitely.

Also, the clips holding on the window brushes are a different part from inner and outer because the outer have to grab the trim (and they are very hard to remove). The part number for the inner clips is 107 988 07 78, and the outer clips is 116 988 00 78, something like 5 per window brush. You can reuse your old ones if they are not broken.

Here are my outer brushes, pulled from the inside of a parts car. I had to replace the clips from my original outer brushes so the chrome trim would fit back in place. I washed the felt surface with Simple Green and water, then put a light coating on 303 Aerospace Protectant on the exposed rubber portion.

These do get a little bent out of shape in storage, or sometimes upon removal, but the insides are a serrated metal and they can easily be shaped flat again (and need to be flat to fit perfectly against the glass). I like to carefully squeeze on the hollow portion of the rubber to make it have a little tension on the glass, and then they eventually conform to the proper shape.

I like to remove the inner brushes by pushing up on them with a large, flat screwdriver, putting a rag on the top of the door to prevent scratching. I use a plastic prybar on the outside brushes to lift off the trim at each clip area, though if it's really stuck a screwdriver can work if you use a rag or something underneath to protect the paint.

The brushes are installed to the trim first (the clips are a pain, and you have to be totally accurate making sure that the ends of the brushes line up perfectly with the notches in the trim so the brushes fit into place on the glass when the trim/brush unit is installed).

Also, the outside rear view mirrors have to be removed to remove the front trim and brushes. :(
