Why two starter solenoid wires?

On most cars, other than the large battery cable, there is only one wire going to the starter solenoid.
On MBs, there are two. I am about reinstall the starter (easy with the heads off :-), so I need to know which one goes where, and am also wondering what the other wire does.

one is for the solenoid the other I believe is part of the resistor bypass ignition circuit, so that when cranking the coil sees 12V.

It does matter which goes where.

One will, when 12 volts is applied, pull in the solenoid. The other, when the solenoid is pulled in, will supply 12 volts.

1971 250C 114.023 Sadly, it's been sold. I will miss it.
1976 450SEL 116.033 Maybe not so sadly, it's also gone. It was beginning fall apart more than I was willing to put it back together.

OK, thanks. When I installed the starter I saw that the screws and the connectors were different size, so it was obvious which one went where.
