M117 986 1977 & timing chain
I know the timing chain and rails on my W108 is something that needs revision.
Is this the same for W116s? I just got an euro 450SEL and don't know much about this car. Also, Does anybody know a place near Orlando that can check and refill my AC with R12?

Yes, it's nearly the same engine in the w116. This site has technical articles, one of which is about how to replace the chain. In that article it also shows how to check to see how much the chain is stretched. That will tell you how worn it is. Of course it's possible the chain was changed so there is little stretch, but the guides were not, and they are worn.

Timing chain probably needs attention, but guides on a W108 should be metal and not need replacing. Later cars had plastic guides which can break and cause the chain to jump time.
If your W116 is a 75 or earlier, the engines are almost identical. Later CIS cars had hydraulic lifters and a different fuel injection system. I'm surprised that you can't pickup R12 in Mexico?

The car is a 77 only 67,000 miles ... Only AC is low on coolant. * I guess, Its not that important I think the weather is not that hot yet and windows down will do.

The engine has low miles, but will take a look for stretch just to be safe.

If you drive through Dallas, I can top you up, but I suspect that this will be the very long way around. Check the local craigslist, there is always someone selling a can.

Thank you, Al. I thought of doing that to pick up the bumpers .... But it's a long way deviation and I don't have much spare time.
I'm doing this with the family and the road trip is 50% of the reason why I got this car.... Orlando, Panama City, New Orleans, Houston, Laredo.

116 and 117 timing chains are not the same.
The 116 chain has 186 links and the 117 has 198 links.

mog probably thought you meant the 116 engine, not chassis. All m117s use the same chain from the 4.5 to the 5.6 regardless of application / chassis.
