W111 questions - Fintail
I have always loved the fintail w111 Mercedes
I have owned 2 W123 300d's, and a 1972 280sel How is the W111 as far as reliability? I ride my bike around most of the time, and probably drive about 250 miles a month. I am pretty handy in the garage, but no master mechanic. When looking at cars for sale, is there anything in specific I should look at?

Yes , inspect the cars from the undercarriage upwards....Focusing on any rust along the way.....If a solid undercarriage is discovered , then check the body for rust.....Once it passes the rust test....Begin the normal inspection....
Stay away from the rusty cars . Too expensive to repair... Reliability? If maintained , they're very reliable..... |

Our Experience
We are new Finnie owners. We bought ours, a 239S with a 4-speed column shifter for around $7500. It is not rusty but the body has an inexpensive paint job – a 5 footer if you will. Mechanically we had to go through lots of stuff but the engine and transmission are great. All of the other things, like suspension and brake rebuilds, new shocks, new 14" rims and tires, and some performance modifications add up real quick. We probably at $14,000 right now. Of course, if you are capable to do the work yourself, you are lucky! But it is the best and most fun car we've had in a long time. We've got it sorted to the point we would drive it across country.

Great cars, far different from a W123 however, I don't feel any similarities when driving the two types. If driven regularly and maintained they are as reliable as a clock, if they have had deferred maintenance or are leaking those costs will add up. This is in addition to the comments about rust, avoid those cars, the rust you see is likely 20% of what's lurking beneath. Records, records, records and have an indie inspect it who is very knowledgeable about that specific model range. MFI cars are thirsty but great fun over carburetted cars. Switch to modern ignition like Pertronix and as soon as you buy it go through ALL the fuel filters, screen in the tank, check fuel pump function, etc., to avoid common fuel delivery issues from sitting. Ideally drain, clean and reseal tank if possible or if the in tank screen shows lots of garbage. DO NOT run fuel injector cleaner as this tends to release lots of crud that has been sticking to the inside of the tank and fuel lines, just out gas in her, maybe Stabil ethanol treatment if you like and drive it as often as possible to keep it in good running order.
