My weekend project on my 62 220SE (2.8 engine) seems to have taken a turn for the worse. My clunking noise is really in the rear end. The product of a broken tooth. Of all the things that I have worked on, a rear end is not one of then. Am I screwed? Is this a repairable problem or do I have to replace the whole thing? Where can I find parts for this job? and how much ?
I also have a spare rear end out of a 70 250, is there any way to use it, whole or guts (I didn't think it was possible). Any help is good help. As always this site is on of the best. The 114 [ 250 ] diff. is open axle and will not fit. Your's is enclosed swing axle and
rather difficult to change ring and pinion. They are available at any decent salvage yard and can be found for short $$$ as they were in many 60's chassis. The ratio is stamped on the side case below the drivers side axle tube. After changing it out , it is important to centralise the unit via the cross strut. I believe the offset on that model is 42mm. Art, Thanks for the reply. I figured as much with the 114 differential. I was really grabbing at straws. After a new engine (upgraded to 2.8 M130) and all kinds of odds and ends worked on, not to mention 6 months with my baby off the road. I got to drive it only about 200 yards before this happend. So its safe to say I am a little upset. But I hope to do the job next weekend, so I can get this car on the road for the summer.
One question, I have a more powerful engine in the car now than before. Is it a good idea to change the gear ratio? and how would that affect proformance? Thank You, Michael |

I have done some rear changes with satisfying results on these 6's as they are mostly in the high 3 to low 4 ratio's. High rpm/mph and a common complaint from many owners. The 3:59 - 3:69 are out there on some salvage models [ can't remember which at the moment]. Aside from incorrect speedo readings, all should be fine and in my opinion, an improvement. I have done a couple of 113's with a change to the 108-280Se-4.5 3:27 ratio and just love it. The best of both worlds. If you check for salvage , do look at the brakes as there were both disc and drum on the different models. Arthur |

Once again, more good info. The rpm problem
really drives me nuts. Running on the highway at 3500+ is up there. I'm half deaf so I can't really talk to my wife at 80 mph, too loud! I think what is in there is a 4:10. What does the type of brakes have to do with the rear end? I unforunately have the last year for rear drums on the 111 coup models. Can I really use a 3:27 or a 3:59? what kind of questions should I ask when ordering, to insure I get one that fits correctly. Thanks again, Mike 62 220 SEb 65 600 72 250C |

The ratio's were optional , so you have to
look at each differential whereI mentioned for each one. 108,111,113, models can be used. The only one with the 3:27 is the 4.5 eng 108 280SE. The reason I mention the brakes is that it easier to change out the complete rear . If you get one with disc, then you have to change the axle tubes. They hols the calipers and it then requires re- shimming of thr ring gear. Not easy. Arthur |

If I were going that far, I would get one with the disc brakes complete and get rid of the drums. The 250se comes to mind. Sorry for the typos on my other reply. Early AM for me !! |

Art, I found a 3:27 out of a 108 4.5 for $400. It does not have calipers. Is this a good price? Also do I need to compress the springs to do this job? 3:27 sounds very low compared to 4:10, will the proformance be ok.
what rpm will it run at around 65 mph. Thanks Mike |
