Engine Not Idling when in Drive

My 280se 4.5 has an issue that I have no idea what might be causing it.

The car starts fine when the engine is cold. I have not tried to start it when the engine is hot. It idles fine when in park or neutral. However, when in drive as soon as I come to a stop at a red light I have to put the engine into park or neutral. If I keep it in drive after about 20-30 seconds the idling speed will reduce and then the engine cuts out.

Not sure why it would idle happily in park/neutral but not in drive. The engine does need a good tune up as it does run a little rough and does backfire mildly.

I plan on taking it to my mechanic as soon as funds become available but I wanted to know what the possible causes might be.

Thank you.

Timing, points, idle mixture, take your pick! Worn points, worn plugs, bad wires, bad rotor / cap, vacuum leaks, pretty much anything that can go wrong with D-Jet can cause this issue. When adjusted right and in proper tune, a 4.5 will never stall. My 4.5 stalled on me a grand total of 0 times there was nothing wrong with it, and once when something was (carbon brush in the cap broke).

Actually, this is quite normal. The engine should be set to idle at about 700-750rpm when warm and in neutral. With it set like that, idle speed will drop to about 500-550rpm when put in drive. If idle is too low in neutral, engine can cut out. So first thing to check, is what are the rpm when idling in neutral (assuming car has a tachometer)

You can easily adjust the idle speed - Just turn the screw in picture below CCW to speed up engine. It is slightly to driver's side in centre front of engine.

There could of course be other things wrong. But don't count on the average mechanic knowing much about these D-Jetronic engines

Thanks for both of the replies. I will try adjusting the idle speed a little to see if that helps. If it does not, I hope it is something inexpensive that needs replacing!
