Tom, Graham,

The fan is not yet installed, so I'm sure that's not it :-) The v-belts are not on either.
I had the pistons/rods out and I did not see any visible damage. I suppose there is a chance I did not tighten one of the rod cap bolts, but I am usually very thorough with that kind of stuff.
I have cranked it for probably 2 minutes (a total of many times), so I would think the tensioner got enough oil. I will crank it more when a friend comes over to look at it, so if it's just that then it should go away soon.
I did check the cam timing on the right side and it lined up, plus the lobes on #1 were pointing up, which makes sense when the piston is at TDC.

It runs!!

Got the engine started! Apparently the noise comes from the starter or ring gear, as it only happens while cranking.
There are new issues, I will post them in a new thread including a video of the startup.
