I thinbk he's asking how to confirm it was a factory 300SEL 3.5 with 4-speed. The first 8 digits are universal chassis codes followed by the chassis serial number. Take a modern car for example with (from random eBay ad) 1C4RJFDJ0CC100192, the first few numbers and letters before the "100192" are the identifiers for what the vehicle is (1 USA, J in position 5 for Jeep, etc)... for the Benz you provided the following apply:
109.056-10-xxxxxx 109 - 109 chassis (300 series) 056 - 3.5 L fuel-injected V8. Other possible numbers: 057 for 4.5 V8, 018 for 6.3 V8, etc) 1 for LHD vs 2 for RHD 0 for Manual Trans vs 1 for Hydrak or 2 for Automatic Any more specifics require the info off the data plate on the rad support or the build sheet from MB.

It just seems that most people today expect such a car to have one as they as so common today. |

As far as replacing the air bags goes....
I have done this a few times on my cars and others. It is time consuming but easy. Once you remove the air cell from the car you just unscrew the bag from the cell and put the new bag on. The only 'problem' I have ever run into was removing the air piston, which is at the bottom of the entire assembly, from the bag. But again... Really just something that takes time. I am sure there is a 'how-to' posted somewhere on this board. |

budget 3 grand for four air bellows, like 30 special orings (square cross-section) and a couple of used valves for the air suspension system.

Or perhaps I missed something? Everything worked when I put it back together. Of course, I only did the air cells. If you are talking about the entire system.... Yeah, it can get pricy pretty quick. |
