Your seats don't have the same internal structure as mine. I have lateral strips of springy steel. At any rate, I hope my guy can do the job. He quoted a price of $450 labor.

Yeh the w115 seats are built better then the w123.....yeh that's labor....plus material add another 700$....I once paid 200$ just for foam for a couch....try and post in the wanted section here and benzworld for w115 seat pads...you may get them cheaper..

Actually, I can buy the rubberized horsehair for only $2.83/square foot. And my calculations are about 72 square feet. Now I got a price for foam inserts and they wanted about $1500 and didn't even have the bench back!

I checked with him.
For your W115.114 300D.
His answer was $550.00 + shipping.
This would be a set of six ready to install fitted modern foam pads.
Base and back "both front and rear seats".

Thanks Roy. Too bad your guy is in the wrong country. lol. The shipping alone would cost more than the job itself. In the states, people work quite a bit cheaper than they do in Toronto. I watch these reno shows and that refurb guy from American Restoration, and I can't believe how little he charges. The guy can't even afford sleeves for his shirts. lol

Well, I made a video to show the guy who quoted me $450 the seats, because I suspected he didn't know what he was talking about. After looking at the video, his price is now $1250.

The question is, do I spend the money knowing I am going to sell the car?

Correction: Another guy quoted me $1250. The guy who quoted me $450 seems to have disappeared completely!

The question applies to so many different problems facing these older, less-valuable (to some) and non-concourse type cars... Without answering your question in particular, I find that;

If you seek out the right buyer, then no need to spend the money. That buyer will give it the $$$, the love and the care that it needs to remain proper and cherished. (I look for cars like that and put in a few $ and a lot of elbow grease, but end up with something nice)

If the wrong buyer comes along*, this plus a bunch of other small yet expensive problems will start its junkyard spiral cycle...a series of buyers, each just thinking about offloading it to the next.

If you spend the money and do it, you'll at least have the pride of ownership while it is under your stewardship.

Ultimately, each "spend/save & perform/defer" choice we make with these cars either keeps them on on the road longer in some way, or heads them down the path of scrapping.

*That's one of the realities of older cars, I guess. The old recurring question of "I bought it for $2,500 and it needs an $800 whatsit or a $1000 whatnot... Why should I care enough to spend it?"

I guess I am doomed for I don't see it being about the money, the return or the potential future sale.

Good luck! Hope the seats get done at the end of the day, by you or the next keeper of the car.

Where's that told you so smiley when you need it

I would't spend that kind of money unless the car was pristine and low miles or I was going to keep it. This body style just really isn't worth enough to put that into just the seats. Its sad, a while back...I tossed the whole mint interior from a w115....no body wanted it nor the skins...

Again I would suggest posting in the wanted to buy section and seeing if anyone has a parts car or will be gong to a pick n pull that has one and can pick the stuff up for you.

You may end up selling it along the route.

Argggh, what were you thinking? Expanding foam dries hard anyway.

Upholstery stuffing

Has anyone thought of sourcing seat pads from a source other than GAAH or World Upholstery? Specifically from a Volkswagen supplier? I was Looking at Wolfsburg West. They've got rubberized horsehair seat pads for $31. They also have felt material to be used as fill to round out contours. The seat frame construction of the 68-73 VW bugs seems remarkably like Mercedes. See 1968-1975 Bug front bottom seat pad
I've emailed them asking for dimensions, but haven't had a response. My other choice would be high density foam.
Any thoughts?

I've had the same thought but don't know if any VW stuff would be close in size. Maybe split a VW bench seat in two for our bucket seats.
