Far-fetched idea? Can I save a few bucks on a new exhaust...?
 

My w116 350se is LOUD sounds like a muscle car. I am so ready to have sound that suits the car (and doesnt drown out my music). Anyways I am about to changed the manifold gaskets and order new header pipes (from header to resonators, no cats came on this car). I also plan to purcahase Time Valve resonators onward (this is all they have available for this car). Ill have the headers and pipes ceramic coated so they can hopefully keep up with the appearance and longevity of the Timevalave exhaust....

Now onto the idea. I just bought a new house and I would rather put funds toward replacing the old carpet than an exhaust for a car I drive on the weekends. So if this works I will hold off on the timevalve pipes I have a w116 300sd i was parting out and the exhaust on that was fine but it is a single pipe instead of dual pipes. It appears to have the same path as the exhaust on the 350se I was thinking it could work as a temporary fix if i could have coupler to attach the dual pipes to the 1... doesnt seem like to much work for an exhaust shop? if its something like$200 then Ill just go ahead and spend the $750 for the timevlave now. Any thoughts?

Correct me if I'm wrong--But the 350SE is a V8 type engine...?

The 300SD would be the Inline 5 pot engine....

Therefore--the exhausts would be completely different.

BTW--Whats a 'time-valve'? Sounds like a part for the Tardis--Not a car!

yes it is a v8 and it is dual exhaust. I only want to use muffler and resonator. The two headerpipes/downpipes from the 350se meet before the resonator, so theoretically i could attach the back half of the 300sd exhaust to these pipes if i had some kind to a coupler that would adapt two pipes to one.

Timevalve is a manufacture for custom exhausts for europeans cars here in the USA. Unparalleled quality... "exact" factory design/specs except they use stainless steel.

You will lose a little top end performance, but it should work as a temporary fix. I'd think an exhaust shop would charge ~$100 to install that system.

I had a 108 with a timevalve exhaust. I'm mad that I scrapped it and didn't save it for my current 109 4.5. Timevalve makes nice systems, no doubt, though if money's an issue, you'd save a lot of money by just buying a normal resonator and muffler. If you only drive the car on weekends, the system will still last for a long time, probably longer than your 116 if it has even a bubble of rust.

Go to wrecker and get a W126 380-560 rear exhaust muffler .It will quiet the car down and actaully create a bit of extra performance with the rest of your proposed exhaust system.

@adv_rider, i totally agree which is why I only want carpet in the bedroom. I dont like waking up and putting my feet on a cold floor.

@Mercmad6.3, how much of the exhaust from the W126 380-560 is the same? Would the muffler & resonator work?

@WANT'71 She's got a little bit of rust but it is manageable. Letting her succumb to the evil forces of iron-oxide is unfathomable. It would be a greater sin than cheating on my wife (just dont tell her I said that)

Find out what works and then start searching Ebay. The exhaust components on Mercedes are built so well that they can outlast the car, and they are so expensive new that someone can find a good one in a salvage yard and make a few bucks selling it on Ebay.

It is worth a few minutes of your time to check this out.
