I'm not sure if this is a good system for R134a. I've had several Mercedes that worked great with R134a, but some just sucked. When I evacuated the system and replaced with R12, they worked great.

My suggestion here is to either use R12 or ES12a. The reason for suggesting ES12a is that I've tested a W109 with ES12a and it worked pretty well.

Hi Al,

What is ES12a? Is that Freeze 12?
I assume I would have to flush the system again?
thanks,

Csaba

ES12a is also sold as envirosafe and is basically propane.

Unlike Freeze12 which is basically R134 blended with something else to help carry the mineral oil, ES12a is not a blend and mixes well with R12 or R134 oil. I don't think you need to flush the system. A good vac should be enough.

There are lots of opinions around using it which you can read all about by using google or searching the forum. But strictly speaking, for it's effectiveness in working on your type of car. I've tested it and it worked well, the head pressure was low and the compressor cycled on and off as it should have.

As the molecules are larger, you don't need as much volume to charge a system up (about 1/3 size).

I've used it charge up systems that I'm planning to convert to R12 in order to determine if there are any leaks as some leaks only show up under pressure and not under vacuum. It's cheaper then R12 and seems to do a pretty good job.

It was on my car that Al tried the (whatever acronym it was). It's working pretty well. At the proper pressure, you should be able to sit in 90 degree heat without getting too hot. I certainly wouldn't call it a freezer in my car, but it just barely keeps me comfortable here in TX. I think going to R12 would improve it but I still need to button up my leak at the compressor. If you're sure your system is tight, might as well pull a vacuum on it and put in R12. There's always some for sale on Craigslist.

Thanks,

David

Al,

Thanks for the info! Likely I will play with it for a bit before making any kind of decision.

David, do you know what the vent temps are? Maybe we can get together sometimes and compare. The next two weeks would be better for me because my son is with the grandparents.

BTW, since I replaced my coil to the Pertronix one for V8 engines the car runs very well and pulls even in the high rpm ranges.
bye,

Csaba
